Metabolic interest in this compound centers on fat distribution rather than on hormone levels alone. Imaging trials in adults with excess abdominal fat report reductions in visceral adipose tissue, while subcutaneous depots change comparatively little. Growth hormone and IGF-1 are presumed to carry the effect, but the separate contribution of each is not firmly established. Whether these changes persist after treatment stops, and whether they alter longer-term health outcomes, remain open questions that published work does not answer consistently.
Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide of forty-four amino acids whose sequence reproduces human growth hormone-releasing hormone. Its distinguishing feature sits at the amino terminus, where a trans-3-hexenoyl group replaces the free amine. That acylation slows cleavage by dipeptidyl peptidase IV, an enzyme that otherwise removes the first two residues and inactivates the natural hormone quickly. The modified peptide therefore persists longer in circulation while keeping the same receptor target. It is handled as a lyophilized solid and dissolved shortly before use.
Signaling begins at the GHRH receptor, a class B G protein-coupled receptor displayed on somatotroph cells of the anterior pituitary. Receptor occupancy activates Gs proteins, which raise adenylyl cyclase activity and intracellular cyclic AMP, in turn driving protein kinase A dependent pathways. The downstream output is synthesis and pulsatile secretion of growth hormone into the bloodstream. Hepatic tissue and peripheral sites respond by increasing insulin-like growth factor 1 production. Somatostatin and IGF-1 itself supply negative feedback that caps the size and duration of each secretory burst.
Pharmacodynamic studies show that tesamorelin reduces visceral adipose tissue more than subcutaneous adipose tissue in the studied population. This selectivity may relate to differences in blood flow and hormone sensitivity between fat depots. Effects on glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity have been investigated, with some trials reporting modest changes and others showing stability. The precise relationship between growth hormone exposure, IGF-1 levels, and visceral fat loss remains an active area of analysis.
Tesamorelin binds to growth hormone-releasing hormone receptors on somatotroph cells in the anterior pituitary. Receptor activation increases intracellular cyclic AMP and promotes synthesis and secretion of growth hormone. Because the peptide mimics endogenous GHRH, it amplifies the normal pulsatile release of growth hormone rather than providing exogenous growth hormone directly. This upstream action distinguishes tesamorelin from recombinant growth hormone preparations and from growth hormone secretagogues that act at different receptors.

Receptor-level activity begins when the peptide binds the GHRH receptor, a class B G-protein-coupled receptor found on pituitary somatotroph cells. Occupancy triggers Gs-mediated activation of adenylyl cyclase and a rise in intracellular cyclic AMP, which in turn promotes synthesis and pulsatile release of growth hormone. Because the compound acts upstream of the growth hormone axis rather than supplying hormone directly, its effect depends on intact pituitary function. Binding studies in cell culture and animal models have established this pathway; the detailed kinetics of receptor recycling in humans remain less well characterized.
Physicochemical behavior is dominated by the peptide backbone. The molecule is hydrophilic and carries a net positive charge near neutral pH, owing to several arginine and lysine residues. In solution it adopts a largely unstructured conformation, and aggregation is a known concern for peptide products of this size. Oxidation of methionine and deamidation of asparagine or glutamine residues are the principal chemical degradation routes. These liabilities shape how the material is formulated, handled, and analyzed, and they explain why lyophilized presentations are common in research settings.
Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide analog of growth hormone-releasing hormone, built from 44 amino acids. Its sequence follows the natural human GHRH(1-44) backbone, with a trans-3-hexenoyl group attached to the N-terminal tyrosine. This modification blocks recognition by dipeptidyl peptidase IV, the enzyme that rapidly truncates the native hormone in circulation. The result is a molecule with a substantially longer plasma residence time than unmodified GHRH, which makes it practical for clinical and laboratory study.
Whether the drug improves hard clinical outcomes is not settled. No completed trial has shown a reduction in heart attacks or strokes among treated patients, although a dedicated cardiovascular outcomes study has been discussed in the literature. Investigators have also examined hepatic fat in people with HIV and fatty liver disease, cognitive measures in small cohorts, and changes in bone density. Regulatory labeling emphasizes monitoring of insulin-like growth factor 1 because supraphysiologic levels raise questions about tissue growth, and the clinical significance of that signal remains an open question rather than a demonstrated harm.
Binding of tesamorelin to the growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor on anterior pituitary somatotrophs activates a Gs protein pathway, raises cyclic AMP, and triggers release of stored growth hormone into the bloodstream. Because the analogue resists dipeptidyl peptidase-4, its plasma residence time exceeds that of native GHRH, producing a larger and more sustained secretory signal. The released growth hormone then acts on the liver and peripheral tissues to raise insulin-like growth factor 1, which feeds back on the hypothalamus and pituitary. This axis explains both the intended effects on fat distribution and the biological markers used to track them.
Uzunidis, Pandolfi & Brugal (2026) identify fossil material of the narrow-nosed rhinoceros at the Mas des Caves site (France) belonging to at least nine individuals from different size classes, and report evidence of similar plant selection by individuals of different age. Guðjónsdóttir et al. (2026) sequence a high-coverage genome from woolly rhinoceros tissue preserved within the stomach of a permafrost-preserved wolf from Tumat (Sakha Republic, Russia) and reconstruct the evolutionary history of the woolly rhinoceros on the basis of genomic data from this and two other Siberian individuals, finding no evidence of genomic erosion or a prolonged reduction in population size before the extinction of the species. Lei et al. (2026) reconstruct the population history of the woolly rhinoceros on the basis of data from mitochondrial and nuclear genomes and from habitat modeling, and report evidence of higher genetic diversity in mid-latitude Eurasia compared to regions from high latitudes, as well as evidence of genetic introgression from Stephanorhinus kirchbergensis. Evidence from the study of morphology of petrosals and inner ears of fossil horses, indicating that the ear region is informative for the studied of phylogeny of odd-toed ungulates, is presented by Goodchild et al. (2026). A study on the evolution of the shape of equid skulls is published by Wisniewski & Slater (2026), who find no evidence of a significant impact of the evolution of hypsodont teeth on facial proportions in Equidae. ==== South Korea ==== There are currently two locations in Seoul, in the Itaewon and Hongdae districts, which attract the most foreigners and college students. The two branches opened in the summer of 2010, Itaewon's branch coming first. A Taco Bell had long been a presence at the U.S. Army's Yongsan Garrison, which is off-limits to non-military personnel, and for a time there was a tongue-in-cheek grassroots campaign by non-Korean, non-military foreigners in Seoul to get another Taco Bell location.
=== University of Oxford === Despite his success in revitalising the pathology department at Sheffield, Florey had grander ambitions than following the example of Douglas and dying in office. An opportunity arose with the death of Georges Dreyer on 17 August 1934, the holder of the chair of pathology in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at Oxford. Dreyer had overseen the construction of a palatial new laboratory, but by 1934 it had attracted few students and researchers. While Florey had reservations about leaving Sheffield for Guy's, he had none about Oxford. The electoral board met on 22 January 1935, and Florey was appointed Professor of Pathology and Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, which controlled the chair, effective 1 May 1935. The chair came with an annual salary of £1,700 (equivalent to £105,000 in 2025). The school's budget was £3,432 a year (equivalent to £211,000 in 2025) for all equipment and salaries except Florey's. He enforced strict economy measures such as forbidding the use of the lift, which saved £25 a year.
On-line mass spectrometry was develop to solve some of the limitations and problem that develop from off-line analysis, such as evaporation and chemical reactions of particles in the filters during long analysis time. On-line Mass spectrometry solves these problems through the collection and analysis of aerosol particles in real time. On-line instruments are very portable and allow for spatial variability to be examined. These portable instruments can be put on many different platforms such as boats, planes, and mobile platforms (e.g. car trailers). An example of this is in the picture at the beginning with the instrumentation attached to an aircraft. Like off-line, on-line mass spectrometry has many different type of instruments, which can be broken up into two types; instruments that measures the chemistry of the particle ensemble (bulk measurement) and those that measure the chemistry of individual particles (single-particle measurement). Thus based on analytical need different instrumentation is used in analysis of the aerosol particles.
The iodine pit, also called the iodine hole or xenon pit, is a temporary disabling of a nuclear reactor due to the buildup of short-lived neutron poisons in the reactor core. The main isotope responsible is 135Xe, mainly produced by beta decay of 135I. 135I is a weak neutron absorber, while 135Xe is the strongest known neutron absorber. When 135Xe builds up in the fuel rods of a reactor, it significantly lowers their reactivity, by absorbing a significant amount of the neutrons that provide the nuclear reaction. The presence of 135I and 135Xe in the reactor is one of the main reasons for its power fluctuations in reaction to change of control rod positions. The buildup of short-lived fission products acting as nuclear poisons is called reactor poisoning, or xenon poisoning. The buildup of stable or long-lived neutron poisons is called reactor slagging.

== Mechanism of action == Troglitazone, like the other thiazolidinediones (pioglitazone and rosiglitazone), works by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs). Troglitazone is a ligand to both PPARα and – more strongly – PPARγ. Troglitazone also contains an α-Tocopherol moiety, potentially giving it vitamin E-like activity in addition to its PPAR activation. It has been shown to reduce inflammation. Troglitazone use was associated with a decrease of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) and a concomitant increase in its inhibitor (IκB). NFκB is an important cellular transcription regulator for the immune response.
If early organisms had been driven by the same environmental conditions to evolve similar biochemistry convergently, they might independently have acquired similar genetic sequences. Theobald's "formal test" was accordingly criticised by Takahiro Yonezawa and colleagues for not including consideration of convergence. They argued that Theobald's test was insufficient to distinguish between the competing hypotheses. Theobald has defended his method against this claim, arguing that his tests distinguish between phylogenetic structure and mere sequence similarity. Therefore, Theobald argued, his results show that "real universally conserved proteins are homologous."
== Incompressible flow equation == In most flows of liquids, and of gases at low Mach number, the density of a fluid parcel can be considered to be constant, regardless of pressure variations in the flow. Therefore, the fluid can be considered to be incompressible, and these flows are called incompressible flows. Bernoulli performed his experiments on liquids, so his equation in its original form is valid only for incompressible flow. A common form of Bernoulli's equation is:
(WINNER) The contestant won the whole competition. ‡ The contestant won the Pre-Heat challenge. (WIN) The contestant won the Main Heat challenge. (HIGH) The contestant had one of the best dishes for that week. (IN) The contestant performed well enough to move on to the next week. (LOW) The contestant had one of the bottom dishes for that week, but was not eliminated. (OUT) The contestant was eliminated for worst dish.

The amino acid sequence matches human growth hormone-releasing hormone, but the amino terminus carries a trans-3-hexenoyl group instead of a free amine. That single structural change chiefly affects enzymatic stability rather than receptor selectivity.
Growth hormone released from the pituitary stimulates IGF-1 production in the liver and other tissues, so circulating IGF-1 generally rises during exposure. The size of the rise varies between individuals and depends on baseline hormonal status and other concurrent factors.
Reported imaging studies focus on visceral adipose tissue, where reductions are more consistently observed across trials. Subcutaneous depots show smaller and less reproducible changes, so the two compartments should not be treated as equivalent.
It targets the growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor on pituitary somatotroph cells. Binding stimulates cyclic AMP signaling and growth hormone secretion. This is the same receptor used by endogenous GHRH.
